General Instructions
- Additional prescriptions, blood work orders, and medical history forms may be included based on individual patient needs.
- Please follow these instructions to avoid rescheduling your appointment.
- We will make every effort to keep your appointment; however, it is sometimes necessary to make adjustments to the schedule. Your cooperation is appreciated.
- Your admission, procedure, and recovery time will require approximately 2 - 2 ½ hours.

Insurance
It is the patient's responsibility to:
- Bring his/her insurance cards.
- Notify us of any insurance changes.
- Obtain insurance referrals if necessary.
Health Conditions
If you have any of these health conditions, please read the following instructions:
Diabetes:
- Tell them you are having a colonoscopy and will be on a clear liquid diet the day before colonoscopy. Ask how you should take your diabetic medicine.
- If you check your blood sugar at home, please do so and bring the results with you.
Latex Allergy:
- If you are allergic to latex, please call our office at 865-2955.
Medications
Coumadin Patients - Two Weeks Before Your Appointment:
- Please call our office to discuss if you should stop your Coumadin for your procedure. If you are advised to stop Coumadin, you will need to:
- Call the doctor who manages your Coumadin for instruction. Tell them you are having a colonoscopy and biopsies may be performed. Ask when to stop the Coumadin prior to your procedure and when to resume it after the procedure.
Antibiotics:
The American Heart Association no longer recommends prophylactic antibiotics prior to GI Procedures. However, there may be exceptions, if you have a concern contact your family doctor or the doctor that prescribes your antibiotics to discuss this.
Iron Supplements and Vitamins with Iron: Iron supplements & Vitamins With Iron need to be stopped 2 wks before the procedure. *(As stated in the paragraph below Herbal supplements, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Calcium and Glucosamine Chondroitin need not be stopped.)
Daily medication:
Prescription medicine (i.e. blood pressure & heart medicine) should be taken as usual on the day of your procedure with a sip of water. Calcium Supplements, Folic Acid, B Vitamins, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Herbal Supplements, and Glucosamine Chondroitin need not be stopped.
Blood thinning medication:
If you take Plavix, Arixtra, Heparin, Aggrenox, Ticlid or Lovenox please call our office immediately at 865-2955. If you take daily aspirin, you may continue to do so.
Sedation
During your procedure you will be given moderate sedation to help you relax and make you comfortable. This is not general anesthesia. The sedation may make you sleepy and forgetful. You must have someone drive you home. This person must stay in the waiting room and be available to the doctor and nursing staff. They are responsible for signing you out at discharge time.
Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions
- Water
- Clear fruit juice without pulp
- Apple juice, white grape juice
- Gatorade and Power-Aid
- Coffee and Tea without diary products
- Popsicles
- Jell-O
- Carbonated beverages
- Clear broth or bouillon
- NutraSweet is allowed
- NO red or purple colored liquids
- Avoid dairy products
- Avoid alcoholic beverages
PREPS

Standard Colon Prep
Bowel Prep:
The prescription for your Colon Cleansing Prep is enclosed. You may purchase it at your local pharmacy a few days before your procedure. The day before your procedure the prep should be prepared according to the instructions that come with the prep. DO NOT mix the prep more than 24 hours prior to the time you plan to drink it. The prep can be taken chilled or at room temperature.
Follow these instructions for drinking the prep:
The Day Before Your Procedure:
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and supper. (See Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions above.) You can have as much clear liquid as you like.
- Begin drinking the prep at 2 p.m.
- Drink 8 oz. of the prep every 15 minutes. Taking the prep too quickly may cause nausea, vomiting, chills, or bloating. You may take the prep slower if necessary. Using a straw may be helpful if the taste is bothersome.
- If you experience nausea or vomiting, STOP drinking the prep and rest for 1-2 hours. Resume drinking the prep at a slower rate.
- Drink all of the gallon prep. It will take several hours to complete.
- Remain close to restroom facilities.
- Bloating may occur, but should resolve once you start having bowel movements.
- Drink plenty of clear liquids to avoid dehydration.
- You may apply a diaper rash ointment to the rectal area if you develop discomfort from frequent stools.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:
- Remember NO solid food or dairy products.
- DO NOT eat or drink anything 5 hours before your procedure.
Take only authorized medications. Daily heart and/or blood pressure medication should be taken as you normally would with a sip of water. Please call for any questions.
After Your Procedure:
- You will be given Discharge Instructions about resuming your activities.
- If a biopsy was taken, you will be notified of the result by mail in 14 working days. If you have questions or concerns please call 865-2955 or 800-403-4683.

HalfLytely Colon Prep
Bowel Prep: The prescription for your Colon Cleansing Prep is enclosed. You may get it at your local pharmacy a few days before your procedure. The day before your procedure you should mix up the prep according to the instructions that come with the prep. DO NOT mix up the prep more than 24 hrs. before you plan to drink it. The prep can be taken chilled or at room temperature.
Follow these instructions for drinking the prep:
The Day Before Your Procedure:
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and supper. (See Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions above.)
- At 12:00 Noon take 4 Bisacodyl Tablets with water. Do not chew or crush the tablets. Do not take the tablets within 1 hour of taking an antacid.
- Mix up the solution in the plastic container by adding lukewarm water to the top of the line on the bottle. Cap the bottle and shake to dissolve the powder. You may add one of the flavoring packets to the solution if you so desire.
- After a bowel movement occurs (usually in 1-6 hrs.) begin to drink the solution.
- Drink 8 oz. of the prep every 15 minutes. It is important NOT to chug or gulp the prep. Using a straw may be helpful if the taste is bothersome.
- Drink all the half gallon prep. **Remain close to restroom facilities.
- If you experience nausea or vomiting, STOP drinking the prep and rest for 1-2 hours. Resume drinking the prep at a slower rate.
- Bloating may occur, but should resolve once you start having bowel movements.
- Do not take other medicines within one hour of starting to drink the solution.
- You may apply a diaper rash ointment to the rectal area if you develop discomfort from frequent stools.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:
- Remember NO solid food or dairy products.
- DO NOT eat or drink anything 5 hours before your procedure.
Take only authorized medications.
After Your Procedure:
- You will be given Discharge Instructions about resuming your activities.

Fleet Phospho Soda
Bowel Prep:
You will need to buy two 1.5 oz bottles of Fleet Phospho Soda from your pharmacy. (Do not get the Fleet Prep Kit.) Fleet Phospho Soda is sold over-the-counter, no prescription is needed. Disregard the directions on the package and follow these directions.
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
The Day Before Your Procedure:
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You may have as much clear liquid as you like. (Refer to Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions above.)
- NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
- Between 5-7pm, mix 1.5 oz bottle of Fleet Phospho Soda with 8 oz of clear liquid and drink. (*If you are using the generic prep, you will need to mix 1.5 oz. of the 3 oz. bottle in 8 oz. of clear liquid and drink.)
- Stay close to a restroom due to frequent bowel movements.
- Drink plenty of clear liquids to avoid dehydration.
- Apply a diaper rash cream if you have rectal discomfort due to frequent bowel movements.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:
- REMEMBER NO SOLID FOOD
- You may have clear liquids up to 5 hours before your procedure time.
- Four hours before leaving for your appointment, mix the remaining 1.5 oz. bottle of Fleet Phospho Soda with 8 oz of clear liquid and drink.
- Stay close to a restroom due to frequent bowel movements.
After Your Procedure:
- You will be given Discharge Instructions about resuming your activities.

Magnesium Citrate Colon Prep
Bowel Prep:
You will need to purchase from the pharmacy:
- One, two ounce bottle of Castor Oil OR two Dulcolax Rectal Suppositories.
- One bottle of Magnesium Citrate.
- Supplies needed to do a 2 quart tap water enema.
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
The Day Before Your Procedure:
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and supper. (See Clear Liquid Diet suggestions above.
- At 2 p.m. the afternoon before your procedure drink one 2 ounce bottle of Castor Oil or take two Dulcolax Rectal Suppositories.
- At 6 p.m. drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate.
- At 8 p.m. take a 2 quart tap water enema.
- Remain close to restroom facilities.
- Bloating may occur, but should resolve once you start having bowel movements.
- Apply a diaper rash ointment to the rectal area if you develop discomfort from frequent stools.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
** At 6 a.m. repeat the 2 quart tap water enema until the stool is watery and clear.
- DO NOT eat or drink anything 5 hours before your procedure.
Take only authorized medications. Daily heart and /or blood pressure medication should be taken as you normally would with a sip of water. Please call for any questions.
After Your Procedure:
- You will be given Discharge Instructions about resuming your activities.

MoviPrep
Bowel Prep:
The prescription for your Colon Cleansing Prep is enclosed. You may purchase it at your local pharmacy a few days before your procedure. Follow these instructions for drinking the prep:

The Day Before Your Procedure:
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and supper. (See Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions above.) You can have as much clear liquid as you like.
- At 5 p.m. empty 1- Pouch A and 1- Pouch B into the disposable container.
- Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve.
- The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz.), until the full liter is finished.
- Drink 16 oz. of any clear liquid.
- Using a straw to drink the prep may be helpful if the taste is bothersome.
- If you experience nausea or vomiting, STOP drinking the prep and rest for 1-2 hours. Resume drinking the prep at a slower rate.
- Remain close to restroom facilities. Bloating may occur, but should resolve once you start having bowel movements. Drink clear liquids to avoid dehydration.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:

The Day Before Your Procedure:
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and supper. (See Clear Liquid Diet Suggestions above.) You can have as much clear liquid as you like.
- At 6:00 pm take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of any clear liquid.
- At 6:15 pm take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of clear liquid.
- At 6:30 pm take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of clear liquid
- At 6:45 pm take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of clear liquid.
- At 7:00 pm take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of clear liquid
When finished you should have taken a total of 20 OsmoPrep tablets with 40 ounces of clear liquid.
* Stay close to restroom facilities.
- You may apply a diaper rash ointment to the rectal area if you develop discomfort from frequent stools.
On The Day Of Your Procedure:
NO SOLID FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS ALL DAY.
- 3-5 hours before your procedure time take 4 OsmoPrep tablets with 8 oz. of clear liquid. Repeat this process every 15 minutes for 2 more times. You should have taken a total of 12 OsmoPrep tablets with 24 ounces of clear liquid when finished.
- Remember NO solid food or dairy products.
- DO NOT eat or drink anything 5 hrs. before your procedure.
Take only authorized medications. Daily heart and /or blood pressure medication should be taken as you normally would with a sip of water. Please call for any questions.
After Your Procedure:
- You will be given Discharge Instructions about resuming your activities.

Sigmoidoscopy Prep
Prep:
YOU MAY CONTINUE YOUR REGULAR DIET.
- Buy 2 regular Fleet Enemas (green & white box), these are sold over the counter at your pharmacy. You may also buy the generic brand, but check with the pharmacist.
- Use one enema two hours before leaving your home.
- Use the second enema one hour before you leave to come to your appointment.
- Remain close to restroom facilities.
